Feeling your best and at your most confidence isn’t always about the way you look, but also the way you smell. Which fragrance is the best for you? Continue reading for some great tips and advice.

How to Choose a Fragrance for Men

A Brief History of Fragrances

Back in the olden days where hygiene and clean surroundings were not uncommon, one’s nose was constantly suffering from unpleasant odors. Rotting food, smoke and open sewers polluted the air, therefore pleasantly scented potions were somewhat of a necessity.

Perfumes even existed in earlier human civilizations and can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. The world’s first recorded chemist was a lady named Tapputi from 2000BC in Mespotamis. Aromas such as distilled flowers, oil, myrrh and calamus were added to water and filtered over and over again, thus creating a perfume. This method was adopted by the Egyptians. They began to bottle the fragrances and added some other popular ingredients such as frankincense, rose and peppermint. Some were used for cosmetic or medicinal intent, while other scents were used for religious purposes.

The earliest know perfumery to date was discovered in Cyprus. During 2004 – 2005, evidence of a factory that existed 4,000 years ago was found by a team of archeologists. Its enormous size suggested that perfume was being produced on an industrial scale.

Why Do We Wear Fragrances Today?

Along with increasing your confidence and attractiveness, wearing a fragrance can also prove popular with the ladies. Various studies have shown that the right fragrance can be an important factor for women when choosing a mate. In addition, women tend to have a more finely-tuned sense of smell to men. Women’s noses can even be more sensitively tuned to male pheromones. Some fragrance companies combine these types of smells to create a memorable, raw scent.

By wearing a good fragrance, you can confirm the impression that you are a sharp, successful man. Dressing up helps us to look a million dollars, but smelling good can help make you feel it too.

Fragrance, Cologne, Perfume – What’s the Difference?

Fragrances come in many forms and fall into the following categories:

  • Cologne (Eau de Cologne): This is the oldest term used for perfume and is often used in North America. Colognes are often fresh, light and fruity and and contain 2-4% perfume oils in alcohol and water. They generally last for around 2 hours.
  • Aftershave: Composed of 1-3% perfume oils, lasting for less than 1 hour.
  • Eau Fraiche: Containing 1-3% of perfume, this is the most diluted version of fragrance and normally lasts for less than 1 hour
  • Perfume (Eau de Parfum): This is the most common term used to describe a fragrance and is used for both men and women. It contains 15-20% perfume oils and can between 5 to 8 hours
  • Toilette (Eau de Toilette): Toilette is a light spray containing 5-15% perfume essence dissolved in water. It last for approx 3 hours
  • Parfum: (from the Latin phrase per fumum – through smoke). Of all fragrance options, this is the most expensive and concentrated, therefore lasting the longest. It is made up of 20-30% pure perfume essence and can last up to 24 hours.

How to Choose the Right Perfume / Cologne?

With so many different options out there, how do you know which cologne is the right one for you?? Studies suggest that a man can naturally detect the right fragrance that works with his natural body scent. To summarize – you are the best person to choose! Here are some tips when shopping around:

  1. When looking around, spray a scent on each wrist and inner elbow.
  2. The smell can differ between different people, so make sure you smell it on you and not just on a piece of card.
  3. Sometime the scent can change during some time, so try keeping it on you for a while (a few hours or for the day) before making a decision.
  4. Between testing each fragrance, smell something strong and distinct such as coffee to refresh your palette.
  5. Some fragrances can trigger off memories, try to keep this in mind, if it’s a happy memory it may bring twice the confidence!
