Back in the olden days where hygiene and clean surroundings were not uncommon, one’s nose was constantly suffering from unpleasant odors. Rotting food, smoke and open sewers polluted the air, therefore pleasantly scented potions were somewhat of a necessity.
Perfumes even existed in earlier human civilizations and can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt. The world’s first recorded chemist was a lady named Tapputi from 2000BC in Mespotamis. They began to bottle the fragrances and added some other popular ingredients such as frankincense, rose and peppermint. Some were used for cosmetic or medicinal intent, while other scents were used for religious purposes.
The earliest know perfumery to date was discovered in Cyprus. During 2004 – 2005, evidence of a factory that existed 4,000 years ago was found by a team of archeologists. Its enormous size suggested that perfume was being produced on an industrial scale.
